COURSE DESCRIPTION

The City & Guilds Level 2 Extended Certificate in Animal Care provides students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to work safely and effectively with a wide range of animals. The course covers key areas such as animal health and welfare, feeding and accommodation, handling, and behaviour. Through hands-on experience at Frampton Farm, learners develop confidence and competence in real-world settings, preparing them for further study or employment in the animal care industry. This qualification is ideal for anyone passionate about working with animals and pursuing a career in this rewarding field. We also offer the Level 2 animal care certificate which is a one day a week course.

Course criteria

UNIT 201, 202, 203 & 217:

In this unit, you will combine theory with practical learning to recognise signs of normal and abnormal animal health, perform routine checks, and carry out preventative treatments. You will study daily care routines, animal welfare legislation, and the five animal needs to ensure proper care and wellbeing. The unit includes practical and written assignments to reinforce learning. You will also learn the contents and use of an animal first aid kit, key first aid principles, and procedures for common injuries, building the knowledge and skills to respond effectively in real situations.

In this part of the unit, you will learn to select and prepare suitable feeding and watering equipment in line with UK legislation and choose appropriate food types and quantities for different animals. You will also plan diets based on life stage and nutritional needs, and monitor and record food and water intake, identifying any issues from poor diets. The section includes a mix of practical and written assessments to build your skills and understanding of safe, effective animal feeding and nutrition.

you will learn how to prepare, clean, and maintain a variety of animal housing environments to ensure they are safe, hygienic, and comfortable. The unit covers selecting suitable materials and equipment, following correct cleaning routines, and disposing of waste in line with health, safety, and environmental regulations. You will develop practical skills in setting up and maintaining enclosures that meet the specific needs of different species while promoting their welfare and wellbeing. Through practical and written assessments, you will demonstrate your ability to maintain high standards of animal accommodation and understand the importance of creating environments that support healthy, stress-free animals..

In this unit, you will learn the basic principles of caring for a range of farm animals, including cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry. The unit focuses on understanding their behaviour, recognising signs of good and poor health, and carrying out routine husbandry tasks safely and effectively. You will also learn about appropriate housing, feeding, and handling methods that promote animal welfare and meet industry standards. Through a combination of theory and practical work, you will develop the skills and knowledge needed to care for farm livestock confidently and responsibly in a professional setting.

In this part of the unit, you will learn about daily regimes for animals and the relevant legislation that governs their care. You will outline current animal welfare legislation and understand how it applies to everyday routines, as well as describe the care and husbandry requirements in relation to the five animal needs, ensuring animals are properly cared for and their wellbeing maintained. This section includes two written assignments to consolidate your learning.

Parents, students and community members are invited to attend this meeting, which discusses educational issues at the high school and its middle and elementary schools. Schools in the Kerrington cluster are: Aldiger, Caramba, Chesterfield, Cutterey, Fraiser, Johnson, Antonio, Lorney Winston, Ramos, and Westford secondary schools

Students will learn to describe the contents of an animal first aid box, including items used to treat injuries and maintain animal health. They will also identify the main principles of animal first aid, such as ensuring safety, assessing the animal, and acting quickly and calmly. Through a combination of written and practical assignments, learners will describe and demonstrate first aid procedures for common animal injuries, developing the knowledge and skills needed to respond effectively in real-life situations.

This course is open to individuals aged 14 and up. No prior qualifications are required, though participants should be able to read, write, and conduct basic research. Many students choose our alternative education setting for its smaller class sizes and relaxed, informal learning environment. It is particularly well suited to home-educated learners or those who find it challenging to thrive in a traditional classroom, providing a supportive space tailored to individual needs. We also welcome secondary school students who wish to study outside of school hours and gain the qualification before reaching college age. Students aged 14–17 will attend a mixed class, while adult learners will attend on a separate day

This is a private education course and no external funding is available. The cost is £50 per lesson, with the full course expected to take approximately 60 sessions, bringing the total to around £3'000. However this does vary from one learner to another.

There is also a fee to register with City & Guilds of approx £100-£150

You will need a few essential items for the course: pens, paper, a lever-arch folder, steel toe-capped or wellington boots, a farm polo or hoodie, and waterproof clothing.
