COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Level 1 Land-Based Studies (Animal Care) course provides an introduction to working with animals and developing essential practical skills in animal husbandry. Learners will explore topics such as animal health and welfare, feeding and watering, housing and handling, and the importance of maintaining safe working practices. Through a combination of hands-on experience and classroom learning, students gain confidence and a solid foundation for progressing to higher-level qualifications or employment within the animal care industry.

Course criteria

The Land-Based (Animal Care) Award is a two-unit course consisting of a mandatory Health and Safety multiple-choice exam and one additional unit chosen by the learner.

UNIT choices

you will learn the essential principles of health and safety needed to work responsibly in land-based environments. The unit covers identifying potential hazards, using personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly, and following workplace procedures to prevent accidents and injuries. You will also learn about the importance of maintaining clean and organised work areas, using tools and machinery safely, and understanding your responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation. Through practical activities and written work, you will develop the knowledge and skills to work safely, efficiently, and professionally in the land-based sector.

In Unit 216, you will learn the principles of maintaining animal health and wellbeing and how to apply them in practice. Aimed at learners progressing into the animal care sector or further study, this unit covers identifying signs of ill health, providing preventative care, and promoting high welfare standards. You will also learn how to respond appropriately to a range of animal emergencies.

This unit teaches learners the principles of assisting with animal care and applying them in practice. Aimed at those progressing into the sector or further study, it covers providing food and water, supporting reproduction, and collecting marketable products. The unit also emphasizes high animal welfare standards and responding to animal emergencies.

This unit provides learners with the knowledge and skills to assist with the movement, handling, and accommodation of animals. It covers correct techniques and equipment use, ensuring both animal welfare and human health and safety, and can be adapted for different species and systems.

This unit equips learners with the knowledge and skills to select, prepare, and present animal feed and water, as well as maintain the associated equipment properly.

This unit provides learners with the knowledge and skills to select, prepare, and maintain animal accommodation. Learners will be able to clean and maintain housing, carry out safety checks and basic maintenance, and understand different waste disposal methods.

This unit teaches learners how to assist a supervisor in handling, moving, and restraining animals. It covers understanding normal animal behaviour and using safe approaches and appropriate handling and restraint equipment.

This course is open to individuals aged 14 years and up. No prior qualifications are required, though participants should be able to read, write, and conduct basic research. It is particularly well suited to home-educated learners or those who find it challenging to thrive in a traditional classrooms, providing a supportive space tailored to individual needs.This course is for students attending 1:1 sessions of avialable to schools wishing to book a weekly small group session.

This is a private education course and no external funding is available. The cost is £90 per lesson (based on 3 hours 1:1, with the full course expected to take approximately 20-30 weeks depeding on the students ability and motivation.

There is also a fee to register with City & Guilds (2025) price £80

You will need a few essential items for the course: pens, paper, a lever-arch folder, steel toe-capped or wellington boots, a farm polo or hoodie, and waterproof clothing.
