COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Level 1 Land-Based Studies (Land based practical skills) course focuses on developing practical, hands-on abilities essential for working in outdoor and agricultural settings. Learners gain experience in tasks such as constructing and maintaining fencing, creating and repairing pathways, and other fundamental land-based skills. These practical units not only build technical competence but also promote problem-solving, teamwork, and confidence, providing a strong foundation for further study or employment in the land-based industries. We also offer the Level 1 land based award which is a shorter course or the Level 1 land based animal care options.

Course criteria

The Land-Based (Land based skills) Certificate is a four -unit course consisting of a mandatory Health and Safety multiple-choice exam and three additional units chosen by the course tutor.

UNIT choices

you will learn the essential principles of health and safety needed to work responsibly in land-based environments. The unit covers identifying potential hazards, using personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly, and following workplace procedures to prevent accidents and injuries. You will also learn about the importance of maintaining clean and organised work areas, using tools and machinery safely, and understanding your responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation. Through practical activities and written work, you will develop the knowledge and skills to work safely, efficiently, and professionally in the land-based sector.

The aim of this unit is to equip learners with the fundamental skills needed to assist in construction and maintenance tasks commonly found in landscaping and horticulture. It covers both the construction and upkeep of garden fences and hard surfaces, providing a solid foundation for practical work within outdoor and land-based environments..

The aim of this unit is to introduce learners to the practical activities involved in maintaining and repairing boundary fences, access points, and surfaces such as footpaths, bridleways, and supporting structures including seats, notice boards, bridges, and steps. Learners are encouraged to work safely, considering the wellbeing of themselves and others, while minimising the risk of damage to tools and equipment. The unit also promotes awareness of how maintenance activities can impact local wildlife and the surrounding environment.

This unit provides learners with the knowledge and skills to assist with the movement, handling, and accommodation of animals. It covers correct techniques and equipment use, ensuring both animal welfare and human health and safety, and can be adapted for different species and systems.

This unit equips learners with the knowledge and skills to select, prepare, and present animal feed and water, as well as maintain the associated equipment properly.

This unit provides learners with the knowledge and skills to select, prepare, and maintain animal accommodation. Learners will be able to clean and maintain housing, carry out safety checks and basic maintenance, and understand different waste disposal methods.

The aim of this unit is to provide learners with the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to communicate effectively within the workplace. It also prepares learners to handle, use, and maintain tools and equipment safely and appropriately within their chosen industry, promoting good working practices and professional standards.

This course is open to individuals aged 14 years and up. No prior qualifications are required, though participants should be able to read, write, and conduct basic research. It is particularly well suited to home-educated learners or those who find it challenging to thrive in a traditional classrooms, providing a supportive space tailored to individual needs.This course is for students attending 1:1 sessions of avialable to schools wishing to book a weekly small group session.

This is a private education course and no external funding is available. The cost is £50 per session for group based learning or £90 per lesson (based on 3 hours 1:1, with the full course expected to take approximately 1 year depeding on the students ability and motivation.

There is also a fee to register with City & Guilds (2025) price £80

You will need a few essential items for the course: pens, paper, a lever-arch folder, steel toe-capped or wellington boots, a farm polo or hoodie, and waterproof clothing.
