COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Level 1 Practical Horticulture course provides an introduction to the essential skills and knowledge needed to work in the horticulture industry. Learners gain hands-on experience in areas such as soil preparation, planting, watering, and maintaining plants, as well as learning about basic garden design and safe working practices. The course focuses on developing practical abilities and confidence in a real-world setting, making it ideal for those interested in gardening, landscaping, or further study within the land-based sector.

Course criteria
The Level 1 Practical Horticulture course includes four mandatory units and thirteen optional units selected by the course tutor. All assessments are practical, allowing learners to demonstrate their skills and understanding through hands-on tasks across the required criteria.
UNIT examples
Introduces learners to the basic skills needed to prepare ground or containers for sowing seeds and planting. Working under supervision, learners follow instructions to select and use appropriate tools, materials, and equipment safely, while developing an understanding of soil preparation, plant spacing, and good horticultural practice..
Learn how to correctly plant and establish container-grown plants under supervision. The unit covers selecting suitable plants and containers, preparing planting areas, handling plants safely, and applying good aftercare practices to ensure healthy growth and establishment.
Learn the processes involved in improving soil structure and health. Under supervision, learners prepare soil by removing weeds and debris, loosening the surface, and applying organic mulch correctly to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and enhance plant growth..
Develop the skills needed to water plants effectively and responsibly. Learners work under supervision to identify when plants require watering, select appropriate equipment, and apply correct watering techniques to maintain healthy plant growth while conserving water and ensuring safe working practices.
Learn how to plant flower bulbs correctly for both naturalised areas and formal bedding displays. Working under supervision, learners prepare the site, select suitable bulbs, and use appropriate tools and techniques to ensure successful planting, healthy growth, and attractive seasonal displays.
Learn the basic techniques of indoor seed sowing. Under supervision, learners select suitable seeds, containers, and growing media, then sow and label seeds correctly. The unit also covers maintaining the right environmental conditions to support successful germination and healthy early plant growth.
Develop the skills needed to handle and transplant young seedlings carefully. Under supervision, learners select suitable tools and growing media, lift and separate seedlings without causing damage, and replant them into individual containers to encourage healthy growth and development.

This is a private education course and no external funding is available. The cost is £50 per session for group based learning.
