Entry Level 2 Skills for Working Life landbased construction Route

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Skills for Working Life Entry 2 -Horticulture qualification provides learners with a practical introduction to working in the land based construction indusrty. It focuses on developing essential skills and knowledge needed to work safely and effectively in an outdoor environments.This qualification is aimed at learners working at Entry Level who are interested in starting to develop practical skills in the construction and building industries. The focus is on basic, safe working practices, tool use, simple construction tasks and preparation for further study or employment. For example, it includes tasks such as recognising and using hand tools, working with simple building materials, carrying out basic construction / building tasks under supervision. Suitable for beginners and those with learning support needs, this Entry Level qualification builds confidence, teamwork, and employability skills, preparing learners for further study or entry-level work in horticulture or land-based industries.

This course is also a good progression for our students and young farmers who have been completing AQA Unit Award Scheme Certficiation. It covers slighty more content but they gain a qualification.

  • An interest in hands on tasks such as woodwork and laying slabs
  • Learners should have some basic reading and writing skills, however this course is 99% practical.

Course criteria

Assessment is based on practical activities, observations, and simple written or oral tasks, rather than exams. Learners are expected to demonstrate skills such as basic woodwork, maintaining outdoor areas, using tools safely, mixing cement, laying paving slabs, and working effectively with others alongside employment skills such as ICT & health and safety, showing their ability to apply knowledge in real-life situations within the horticulture industry.

UNIT examples

Unit 201 in the Skills for Working Life qualification focuses on helping learners understand the importance of maintaining safety in the workplace and knowing how to respond appropriately in emergency situations. The unit covers key topics such as identifying common workplace hazards, understanding basic health and safety signs, and following safe working practices

This unit provides learners with a foundational understanding of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and its uses in everyday life and the workplace. The unit covers basic skills such as using computers and mobile devices, navigating software applications, and understanding digital communication tools. Learners are introduced to word processing, spreadsheets, and simple presentations, as well as basic internet use, including safe browsing and email communication.

Teaches learners how to identify, select, and safely use common hand tools and construction materials. The unit covers recognising different types of tools such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, and measuring equipment, as well as understanding the basic properties and uses of materials like wood, metal, and bricks. Learners gain practical experience in handling tools correctly, using materials appropriately, and following health and safety procedures to prevent accidents. By completing this unit, learners develop essential foundational skills for carrying out basic construction tasks safely and effectively.

Focuses on teaching learners how to plan, prepare, and lay a basic concrete path safely and effectively. The unit covers measuring and marking out the area, preparing the base, mixing concrete to the correct consistency, and spreading it evenly. Learners also learn techniques for leveling, finishing, and curing the concrete to ensure a durable and professional result. Health and safety practices, including the correct use of personal protective equipment and safe handling of materials and tools, are emphasised throughout. By completing this unit, learners gain practical experience in a fundamental construction task and develop skills that can be applied in further construction work or training.

Teaches learners how to safely and effectively join wood-based materials using basic methods and tools. The unit covers selecting suitable materials, choosing appropriate joining techniques such as nailing, screwing, or gluing, and using hand tools safely to complete the task. Learners gain practical experience in preparing materials, aligning components correctly, and checking the quality and stability of the finished joints. Health and safety procedures, including the correct use of personal protective equipment and safe handling of tools, are emphasized throughout. By completing this unit, learners develop foundational woodworking skills essential for basic construction and carpentry tasks.

Teaches learners how to prepare and apply finishing materials to wood-based surfaces to protect and improve their appearance. The unit covers surface preparation, including cleaning, sanding, and filling imperfections, as well as selecting and using appropriate finishing products such as paint, varnish, or wood stain. Learners gain practical experience in applying finishes evenly, safely handling materials, and using tools correctly. Health and safety practices, including the use of personal protective equipment and safe disposal of materials, are emphasized throughout. By completing this unit, learners develop essential skills for completing construction and woodworking projects to a professional standard.

teaches learners how to restore and refurbish a timber surface to a painted finish. The unit covers preparing the surface by cleaning, sanding, and removing old paint or coatings, as well as selecting and applying suitable primers and paints. Learners gain practical experience in achieving a smooth, even finish, using brushes or rollers correctly, and checking their work for quality. The unit also emphasises health and safety, including the correct use of personal protective equipment, safe handling of chemicals, and proper ventilation. By completing this unit, learners develop the skills needed to maintain and restore timber surfaces effectively in construction and maintenance tasks.

This course is suitable for learners aged 11 years and above who have an interest in learning hands onskills. As an Entry Level qualification, the content is designed to be accessible, providing more basic information compared to higher-level courses. While there is some theory-based learning, all assessments can be completed through practical demonstrations, worksheets, or oral questioning, making it ideal for learners who prefer hands-on experience and interactive learning.

This is a private education course and no external funding is available. The cost is £50 per session for group based learning. It is also available for 1:1 lessons and for some of our young farmers clubs, please contact us for more information.

There is also a fee to register with City & Guilds (2025) price £34.60

You will need a few essential items for the course: pens, paper, a lever-arch folder, steel toe-capped or wellington boots, a farm polo or hoodie, waterproof clothing, safety goggles & safety gloves.
