Level 1 DIPLOMA Practical Horticulture

TThe Level 1 Practical Horticulture Diploma offers a more in-depth and comprehensive introduction to horticulture through a wide range of hands-on, practical activities in a real outdoor setting. Learners develop skills in planting, growing, soil preparation, garden design and maintenance, and the safe use of tools and equipment.

Alongside practical experience, learners build key employability skills including teamwork, communication, problem-solving, independence, and responsibility. This extended programme provides greater depth and variety of learning, supporting progression into further study, training, or employment within horticulture and the wider land-based sector.

UNIT 101: Prepare Ground for Sowing or Planting Under Supervision

Unit 102: Plant container grown subjects

Unit 103: Prepare soil and apply organic mulch

Unit 104: Water a bed, border or area of plants in containers

Unit 108: Plant flower bulbs for naturalisation

Unit 111: Care for a planted area

Unit 123: Sow seeds indoors in containers

Unit 124: Prick out seedlings singly

UNIT 105: Cultivate land by single digging or forking

UNIT 106: Apply fertiliser by hand to bare ground

UNIT 109: Prepare and plant a hanging basket

UNIT 110: Prepare and plant a container for display

UNIT 126: Pot up rooted cuttings, large seedlings or plugs by hand

UNIT 127: Set out pots, modules or trays following potting or pricking out

UNIT 129: Maintain wooden structures with water-based preservative

UNIT 138: Sow grass seed by hand

UNIT 151: Identify weeds

UNIT 152: Identify annuals and herbaceous perennials
